About Batiks of Africa

A Passion Born in the Workshop

Born from the vibrant energy of Cape Town’s Greenmarket Square, Batiks of Africa is a testament to the passion and perseverance of our founder, Marie Kalunga. In the early days, Marie could be found relentlessly building her vision from the ground up—quite literally—often hauling heavy canopies through the rain to ensure her craft reached the world. That dedication fueled our journey from a small market stall to a permanent home at The Watershed (formerly the Waterfront Craft Market), where we have become a beloved mainstay of the V&A Waterfront.

We take immense pride in celebrating the diverse artistry of the continent, incorporating striking African patterns that range from the bold aesthetics of the West to the rich traditions of the South. Whether it’s our signature shirts and batiks or our handcrafted bags, hats, and home décor, every piece is locally made with a commitment to quality and authentic African soul.
